ACT 16: CONCLUSION

 

MEDIUM SHOT SPEEDY'S MOTHER GETTING OFF HER BIKE AND WALKING INTO SPEEDYS BROTHER'S

BUSINESS.

 

CAMERA IS BEHIND SPEEDY'S BROTHER'S HEAD AS SHE WALKS IN HIS OFFICE. CLOSE UP OF SPEEDY'S

BROTHER FOLLOWED BY MEDIUM SHOT OF THEIR MOTHER HOLDING UP THE FRONT PAGE OF THE

AMSTERDAM NEWSPAPER OF SPEEDY AND SNIPER SPITTING FIRE. HER FACE REVEALS CONCERN AND

UNHAPPINESS. CAMERA SWITCHES TO A ONE-SHOT OF BROTHER LOOKING UNCOMFORTABLE.

 

DIVA(narrating) That was the end of Speedy's big comeback. Speedy's brother changed his mind about loaning him the money

for his taxes

 

BACKGROUND SOUND OF VACUUM AS CAMERA FADES IN TO BROTHER'S OFFICE AFT ER HOURS,

FOCUSES IN ON SPEEDY VACUUMING

 

DIVA(narrating) And Speedy went to work for his brother after all.

 

CAMERA PULLS BACK TO SEE MERI POLISHING DESKS AND DIVA EMPTYING TRASH

 

DIVA (narrating) It will take Speedy a couple of years to work the loan off, but what the heck, the family homestead was saved.

 

ONE SHOT OF NAKOTA OPENING THE FRONT DOOR. A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN HER MID-THIRTIES AND A

LITTLE BOY OF 10 ARE STANDING IN THE DOORWAY. NAKOTA SHOWS THEM INTO THE LIVINGROOM.

MERI AND SNIPER ARE PLAYING BACKGAMMON. SNIPER LOOKS UP AND SEES HIS FAMILY. HIS FACE

LOOKS HAPPY, RELIEVED AND SAD.

 

DIVA (narrating) Sniper's wife and son flew all the way from Hawaii to see him. When they went home, he went back with

them. Sometimes reunions are only for a short season.

 

THREE-SHOT AS DIVA, SPEEDY AND NAKOTA WAVE GOODBYE TO SNIPER AND HIS FAMILY AT THE

AIRPORT AS THEY GO DOWN THE WALKWAY.

DIVA(narrating) Pieter from Prague still wears his Renaissance costume on Leidse Plein when he sings

SHOT OF PHOTOGRAPH WITH PIETER AND TOURISTS.

 

DIVA(narrating) But he makes more money posing with tourists. They really like the fantasy of old-fashioned clothes in front

of old buildings.

RENAISSANCE CLOTHES

 

DIVA Of course, the other street performers picked up on the idea and got in on the action. I guess imitation is the greatest

compliment of all . . .

 

DISSOLVE TO ONE-SHOT OF A SLAGROOM WEDDING CAKE. WEDDING PARTY IN THE BACKGROUND.

 

DIVA(narrating) Ever see a slagroom wedding cake? Speedy's mother bought it because she knows how much I like it. No,

Speedy and I didn't get married,

DIVA (narrating) His mother did. She married someone she knew from a long time ago.

DIVA (narrating) I'm taking Dutch lessons for refugee women now

 

GROUP SHOT OF CLASS OF TWENTY WOMEN. DIVA IS THE ONLY ONE WHO IS A WHITE PERSON AND THE

ONLY ONE WHO IS NOT WEARING A SCARF ON HER HAIR.

 

DIVA (narrating) I'm actually starting to learn how to speak Dutch

 

SHOT OF DIVA BRINGING THREE BEERS TO THE TABLE OF A PUB.

 

DISSOLVE:

 

ONE-SHOT OF SPEEDY IN HIS GARAGE POLISHING A NEW DOWNHILL BIKE. HE IS WEARING BIKE

CLOTHES. LOOKS UP AND SMILES

 

DIVA(narrating) We made a lot of money those few days we had our little show.

 

GROUPSHOT OF SPEEDY, DIVA, SNIPER, MERI AND PAUL COUNTING PILES OF MONEY ON SPEEDY'S

COFFEE TABLE. ALL ARE STILL IN THEIR COSTUMES.

 

DIVA (narrating) Speedy and I earned enough money to finish building his bike.

 

CUT TO LONGSHOT OF A DOWNHILL BIKE CONTEST IN BELGIUM. DIVA IS BY THE FINISH LINE AND SHE

WAVES UP TO ONE OF THE CONTESTANTS. THEY WAVE BACK BEFORE THEY GET POISED TO START.

SPEEDY'S BIKE COMES BARRELING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, JUMPING OVER ROCKS AND DOWN

NARROW PATHS UNTIL IT RACES PAST THE FINISH LINE. THE ANNOUNCER PRONOUNCES SPEEDY'S BIKE

THE WINNER. DIVA IS SMILING AND LAUGHING AS THE OTHER BIKERS COME OUT OF THE CROWD TO

CONGRATULATE THE DRIVER. THE BIKER TAKES THEIR HELMET OFF AND IT IS MERI AND SHE IS

BEAMING. CLOSEUP OF DIVA, PAN LEFT, PULL BACK AND SPEEDY IS BESIDE DIVA, LAUGHING WITH HER.

CLOSEUP OF MERI. MERI SEES ANOTHER WOMAN BIKER IN THE CROWD AND SHE IS FLIRTING WITH

MERI.

 

DIVA(narrating) Speedy and Meri took first place that day in the men's and women's categories.

 

MEDIUM SHOT OF WOMAN BIKER STILL FLIRTING WITH MERI.

 

DIVA (narrating) And Meri got lucky that night, too.

 

CLOSEUP SHOT OF MERI WINKING BACK AT THE WOMAN BIKER.

 

DIVA(narrating) I wrote a screenplay about our lives and how rich they are in this little place in the world. I had never written

one before but I had this book I brought with me from America

OLD-FASHIONED PICTURES OF NAZI VICTIMS LAY IN A LITTLE IN-BOX. THIS TELLS THE AUDIENCE THAT

SHE IS STILL RECONSTRUCTING THEM.

 

DIVA And it gave me a few guidelines. A Dutch producer bought it and gave me a job as a writer. He lets me write at home

where I am surrounded by all those who inspire me.

 

MEDIUM SHOT OF DIVA TYPING AT HER LITTLE DESK IN THE CORNER OF THE LIVING ROOM. MERI IS

SITTING NEXT TO HER, ROLLING A JOINT. IN THE BACKGROUND, CAMERA SEES THE MARIJUANA PLANT

DIVA PLANTED FROM A SEED. IT HITS THE CEILING NOW AND KIND OF CREEPS ALONG THE CEILING

LIKE IVY.

 

DIVA (narrating) He pays me s o well that I hired Meri as my personal assistant. Now both of us have papers to stay in Holland

and we no longer have to worry about the Foreign Policie.

 

MERI LIGHTS JOINT AND PASSES IT TO DIVA.

 

DIVA(narrating) I always said if I ever made it that I would be like Elvis and hire my friends. There's not a lot of work for Meri

to do, but at least it's legitimate.

 

CAMERA FOCUSES ON THE "JACK-IN-THE-BEAN-STALK" PLANT.

 

DIVA(narrating) The seed I planted turned out to be a male and you can't smoke males. (Laughs ) Do you think we would have

let it live this long if it had been a female?

 

LONGSHOT OF SPEEDY RACING THE TWO DUTCH OLYMPIC BIKE TEAM MEMBERS AND BEATING THEM.

(DIFFERENT BIKE CLOTHES THAN LAST TIME).

 

DIVA (narrating) Those Dutch Olympic Bike Team Members come back every few months for more humiliation

 

THREE SHOT OF SPEEDY AND TWO YOUNG BIKERS. THEY LOOK MORE UNHAPPIER THAN THE LAST TIME

WHEN THEY HAND SPEEDY THE 50 EUROS EACH. SPEEDY, DIVA AND MERI ARE SMILING.

 

DISSOLVE TO A TWO-SHOT OF DIVA AND MERI WALKING BY THE BIBLIOTHEEK, HOLDING HANDS. DIVA

GLANCES AT ONE OF THE BIKES PARKED IN A BIKE RACK. IT'S THE LEOPARD SKIN BIKE. RIGHT NEXT TO

IT IS THE SHELL BIKE AND THE PLASTIC PUKE ONE. ALL STILL HAVE THEIR LITTLE 'HOOD' ORNAMENTS

ON THE FRONT OF THE HANDLE BARS.

 

DIVA Look, Meri! Those three bikes that got ripped off! Right there!

 

MERI (suspiciously) Umm . . .

 

DIVA Let's wait for the bastard and see what he looks like.

 

MERI (pulling Diva away) This is too weird for me. Let's just go.

 

DIVA Don't you want to see who stole them?

 

MERI (still guiding Diva away) I think I'll pass.

 

DIVA (shrugging) And here I thought it was some crazy bike thief from an alien Holland from a parallel universe.

 

MERI Let's just keep walking.

 

DIVA Aren't you curious?

 

MERI (shaking her head 'no') No, Diva, there are some things I don't want to know and this is another one of them. Let's j ust

pretend that this is some kind of weird dream that we're having together and forget we ever saw those bikes.

 

TWO-SHOT OF DIVA AND MERI WALKING AWAY.

 

DIVA (narrating) The party continues at Hashoe's.

 

ROOM SHOT OF PARTIERS AT HASHOE'S.

 

DIVA (narrating) And the party continues in Holland.

 

STREET SCENE OF NAKED DUTCH PARTIERS.

 

DIVA (narrating) Which ever Holland you're living in.

 

STREET SCENE OF NAKED ALIEN DUTCH PARTIERS. ALL ARE WEARING METALLIC, TRADITIONAL DUTCH

HATS AND KLOMPS. DIVA'S STOLEN BIKES ARE IN THE SCENE.

 

TIGHT ONE-SHOT OF MOTHER WITH A THREATENING FACE

 

DIVA My mother never stops preaching.

 

MOTHER: You're going to burn in hell in Holland!

 

STREET SCENE OF NAKED DUTCH PARTIERS. CAMERA LOOKS THROUGH THE CROWD AND SEES DIVA IN

THE BACK. DIVA'S LONG HAIR COVERS HER NAKED BREASTS.

 

DIVA (waving) Hi Mom!

 

FADE TO BLACK.

 

FADE -IN TO LONGSHOT OF SPEEDY'S FRONT DOOR, ZOOM IN THROUGH IT TO LIVING ROOM AND PAN

RIGHT TO SEE NAKOTA SLEEPING ON THE SOFA. ZOOM IN A LITTLE AND PAUSE FOR A MOMENT. PAN TO

THE AFRICAN MASK ON THE WALL. IT BEGINS TO MOVE. THE HORNY NEIGHBORS ARE KNOCKING

KLUMPS NEXT DOOR. ZOOM AWAY AND SOFTLY OUT, PAN TO LEFT AND TRUCK FORWARD, UP THE

STAIRS, DOWN THE HALL AND OUT THE DOOR TO THE ROOFTOP. IN THE BACKGROUND, SOUNDS OF

SONG ACHTER DE HEUVELS AND CATS FIGHTING FADE IN, THEN FADE OUT.

 

CAMERA FOCUSES ON SPEEDY, DIVA AND MERI, WHO ARE DANCING TO IGGY POP'S LUST FOR LIFE AS

THE SUN IS BEGINNING TO COME UP.

 

THREE-SHOT OF THEM DANCING AS CAMERA BEGINS TO PULLS AWAY.

 

DIVA(narrating) And life goes on in North Holland where we continue to celebrate life one moment at a time.

 

A SMALL ORANGE LIGHT BEGINS TO GLOW IN THE SCENE. IT SLOWLY BECOMES BIGGER UNTIL

ANOTHER SCENE BEGINS TO FADE INTO THE DANCING ONE.

 

HASHOE IS SITTING ON HIS SOFA IN THE DARK WITH ALL THREE DOGS LYING BY HIM OR ON HIS LAP

SLEEPING. AS THE CAMERA FOCUSES, IT SEES THAT THE ORANGE LIGHT IS THE ORANGE COAL OF HIS

CIGARETTE. HIS HOUSE IS MESSY FROM A PARTY FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE. IN THE END, HE'S ALL

ALONE AFTER THE PARTY AND HE KNOWS IT.

 

HASHOE TAKES A SUCK OF HIS CIGARETTE AND THE LIGHT FROM IT AND HIS RADIO EQUIPMENT MAKE

HIS GOLD WEDDING RING SHINE FOR A MOMENT. HE WATCHES THE LIGHT FROM THE RING FOR A

MOMENT AND WISHES. THEN HE HOLDS THE MIKE UP TO HIS MOUTH

HASHOE MUSES FOR A MOMENT AND SMILES TO HIMSELF BEFORE HE SAYS INTO THE MIKE:

 

HASH Alles goed (smiles again to himself, this time bittersweetly).

 

LONG DISTANCE SHOT OF SPEEDY, DIVA AND MERI'S SILHOUETTES STILL DANCING AGAINST THE

SKYLINE ON THE ROOF. SPEEDY AND DIVA BEGIN TO HOLD EACH OTHER AS THEY DANCE WHILE MERI

DANCES BY THEM.

 

SONG "JUST AS LONG AS YOU LOVE ME" IN DUTCH BY DI-RECT BEGINS TO PLAY.
